Thirteen-year-old twins Ashley and Bryce Timberline’s new stepfather, Sam, discloses that he is responsible for their real father’s death and the twins embark on a mission to discover the truth. As they follow the clues, some ill gotten, they seem no closer to an answer. Meanwhile, they are thrust into the middle of a kidnapping investigation in the small town of Red Rock. Who is Sam Timberline, really, and what is his true aim?

Stolen Secrets is technically well written, with good tension and action throughout. The alternating boy and girl point of views make this a nice read for both genders. And, the portrayal of middle school life in a rural setting is well done. Current readers will find the story a little dated, but still a good, although not an amazing, read.
