Strong swimmer, strong walker and strong willed, thirteen-year-old Bree O’Toole has learned to read the Bible from Brother Cronan in the monastery in Glendalough, a seacoast village in tenth century Ireland. She longs to visit far away lands but after saving a strange teenager from drowning, she inadvertently opens the door for Viking raiders—and gets her wish—but not in the way she expected. She and her fourteen-year-old brother, Devin, are captured, and she is packed off to Norway as a slave. Now Bree must trust God and do what’s right even when she’s afraid. As the pagan Viking ship bears Bree toward Norway, her spiritual journey progresses and prepares her to face deadly storm, superstition, and the opportunity of escape.

Raiders from the Sea, Book One of the Viking Quest Series, is a well written page turner. Although Bree is the heroine, several chapters are written from Devin’s point of view providing a strong male character as well. An excellent read for all age categories by Lois Walfrid Johnson.
