Princess Alia expects her first kiss for her 16th birthday but instead a warrior disguised as a chicken farmer shanghais her. Dressed in rags and an unflattering disguise, Alia must lay aside childish ways and humbly learn the plight and ways of her soon-to-be subjects up close and personal as she embarks on a dangerous cross country journey to marry the prince of a neighboring kingdom. As the danger mounts Alia fights for her life, loses her beauty and much more—but she gains something far more precious.
The spoiled Princess turned pauper plot was interesting and imaginative in the Medieval fairy tale tradition. Great lessons were learned along the way in this clean romance for younger readers. The prologue from a 3-year-old’s point of view was a little bumpy, but once past that, the tale flowed smoothly.
