Lilly Lapp lives with her Amish family on a small farm in New York State. Entering kindergarten in a one room Amish schoolhouse, Lily adjusts to school, new friends and a new baby brother. Life with Lily chronicles two to three years of a young girl’s life as Lily moves from one episode to another; including run-ins with a sneaky mean girl, an uncertain school and financial difficulties that threaten the family, and the small, close-knit, Amish community.

Although the plot lacks the typical overarching goal and conflict of most fiction, the authors, Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzane Woods Fisher illustrate Amish family life through the eyes of a sweetheart little girl. Christian values of love, forgiveness, responsibility and turning the other cheek are beautifully exemplified. Although the book might be a sweet read for younger girls, the length (278 pages) and slow, episodic action might challenge a younger reader’s attention span.
