The prologue, featuring a gigantic brute carrying a screaming mother into some alternate universe while her terrified children watch, sets the tone for Liparulo’s paranormal thriller. After relocating to a creepy old house just outside the small rural town of Pinedale, twelve-year-old David King and his fifteen-year-old brother Xander begin experiencing the paranormal; voices from nowhere, teleporting, and doors opening into what seem to be parallel universes. Xander falls into an ancient Roman Coliseum where while the crowd screams, a gladiator pursues the fifteen-year-old with a bloodied sword. Xander’s father rescues his son, but this only sets the stage for more questions, adventure and disaster. The fast action ends on a cliff-hanger that compels readers to grab the sequel to discover how the quest will end.

Robert Liparulo’s vivid descriptions, bizarre plot and fast action keep the pages turning, while developing sympathy for the protagonists and their family. Caught in this deadly game, the family demonstrates courage, determination, forgiveness and mutual love. A great read.
