Twelve-year-old orphan, Anne Shirley, has been roughly handled by the system until she was accidentally adopted by the elderly Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert as a farm hand on Prince Edward Island. Not the boy the couple expected, still Anne’s vivid imagination, infectious optimism and an amazing gift of gab tempts the Cuthberts to keep her.

Anne of Green Gables is of course a classic and a delight of many readers through generations. However, the slow opening, adult themes and vocabulary might hinder modern readers. Moreover, the reading level is sixth grade.  Still, if students can persevere past the first chapter, Anne and her supporting cast will capture his or her attention as well. Lucy Montgomery has created an amazing character whose optimism, “scope for imagination,” and  perseverance while trying to fit into society is simply enthralling.
