During the Civil War, California gold was demanded by Confederates and Yankees alike to fund their war efforts. When 12-year-old Jeremiah (Jem) Coulter and his family take the stage from their home in the California gold fields to Sacramento, he is in for a wild ride of intrigues, escapes from Confederate sympathizers and disaster. When an opportunity arises, Jem quickly hatches a plan to save his younger sister, Ellie, and maybe thwart the rebel Knights of the Golden Circle in the bargain.
Jem, a spunky and courageous character, makes tough decisions under pressure and stands against evil. Trusting God for help, Jem wrestles with moral dilemmas, and tries to do the right thing. Susan K. Marlow brings this interesting slice of history alive for young readers. The smooth writing, interesting characters, and the book’s high action second half should keep younger students (age 8-11) turning pages once they get hooked.
