Ethan Cooper has a lot on his plate for an eight-year-old. Ma is dead, dad gone who knows where, and Ethan has his younger sister, Alice, and brothers Simon and Will to look after. Now he must guide them to the Briarlane Christian Children’s home. They make the harrowing journey, but will Ethan be able to keep them together as he had promised his mother, and will they fit in?
Set in Pennsylvania in 1907, this story has its roots in the experience of real orphans of that time. Little Ethan must deal with loss and responsibility while confronted with a strange new world that includes friends and bullies alike—and teaching about a Heavenly Father who will never leave him. The plot is somewhat episodic and moderately paced. Looking for Home aims at the younger readers, especially those with interest in history.
