Gabby St. Claire, crime scene cleaner and forensic wannabe, uncovers a murder clue overlooked by police. But while pondering her find, someone nearly burns the crime scene down on her head. The police discount her clue and instead arrest her employee for arson! But a second attempt on her life convinces Gabby she’s on the right track. Help comes from an unexpected quarter when Riley, Gabby’s handsome lawyer neighbor, offers his services. Hungering for justice, Gabby must prove her employee’s innocence, while dodging the traps of the mysterious murderer.
Christy Barritt creates a fun, snarky character who plays the role of the honorable skeptic. Riley, her praying neighbor who just might have a romantic interest, persuasively challenges Gabby’s skepticism. With high action and plenty of plot twists Hazardous Duty kept me guessing—a winner for mystery fans. The juxtaposition of the young, beautiful redhead cleaning up crime scenes reminded me of “Bones” but with better humor. Although technically not a YA title, Hazardous Duty is a great read for teens and adults alike.
