Although a paraplegic, 14-year-old Tyce Sanders owns everyone in virtual reality computer games. However, in the year 2039, an oxygen failure inside their bio dome threatens to doom his community of 200 colonists on the planet Mars. With time running out, Tyce’s mentor, Rawling McTigre, reveals that the years of Tyce’s virtual reality training were more than just a game. Tyce is wired into a robot, he dubs “Bruce,” that is able to withstand the extreme Martian temperatures, elements, and lack of oxygen to explore and serve the colony almost without limitation—like an avatar. Suddenly Tice is no longer wheelchair-bound and finds himself endowed with superhuman capacities. With time running out and extreme measures taken, Tyce must learn to master use of the robot and figure out the oxygen shortage before it’s too late.
Sigmund Brouwer creates a fascinating sci-fi story world with interesting characters and a nice plot. Although some of the technology issues felt a bit off, the author did an amazing job seeing as this book was originally published in 2000. Nevertheless, this book seamlessly weaves some interesting scientific facts about Mars into the plot. The high spirituality woven into the story is followed by excellent question and answers about issues of science and faith. A great read, particularly for the younger audience.
